Leonard H. Stringfield, was a renowned American ufologist who devoted much of his career to investigating one of the most fascinating and controversial aspects of UFO phenomena: the stories surrounding crashed flying saucers.
A World War II veteran. U.S. Army Serial Number 15300961 - He enlisted in the Air Corps on July 9, 1942 at Patterson Field, Fairfield, Ohio.
Stringfield was the director of Civilian Research, Interplanetary Flying Objects (CRIFO) and was instrumental in the publication of ORBIT, a monthly newsletter that disseminated important updates and findings within the UFO research community. In 1957, he became the public relations advisor for the National Investigations Committee On Aerial Phenomena (NICAP), a civilian UFO research group led by Donald Keyhoe, a close friend of Stringfield’s since 1953.
In the late 1960s, from 1967 to 1969, Stringfield further contributed to the field by serving as an "Early Warning Coordinator" for the Condon Committee, a high-profile project focused on investigating UFO reports. Throughout the 1970s, Stringfield published a series of influential books detailing accounts of alleged UFO crash recoveries and the purported retrieval of alien bodies—pivotal works that would shape much of the discourse in ufology.
In 1978, Stringfield was appointed as the UFO research advisor to Grenadian Prime Minister Sir Eric Gairy, a testament to his growing international reputation within the UFO research community.
In addition to his ufology endeavors, Stringfield had a successful career in the corporate sector, working as the Director of Public Relations and Marketing Services for DuBois Chemicals, a division of the Chemed Corporation based in Cincinnati. Despite his professional commitments, Stringfield remained dedicated to his passion for UFO research, self-publishing Status Reports—detailed accounts of alleged UFO "crash-retrieval" incidents—until his death in 1994.
Leonard H. Stringfield passed away on December 18, 1994, in Cincinnati, Ohio after a long battle with lung cancer. His contributions to the study of UFO phenomena, particularly in the realm of crash retrievals, have left an indelible mark on the field. Stringfield will be remembered as a pioneering figure who courageously illuminated one of the most controversial and mysterious aspects of UFO research.
